Uwe Schmidt has been a directly elected member of the Bundestag for constituency 55 Bremen II-Bremerhaven since 2017 and is a member of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

He is a member of the Committee on Transport in the 20th German Bundestag.

He is the rapporteur for seaports and maritime transport for his parliamentary group.

In the Budget Committee, he is his group’s rapporteur for Section 25, the budget of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building.

Since 2022, Schmidt has been the pilot (chairman) of the SPD Coastal Gang, which represents the interests of the five northern German states in the Bundestag.

He has been one of the three spokespersons for the Seeheimer Kreis since 2021.

Schmidt was a member of the Bremen Parliament from 2015 to 2017.

The trained port specialist has been employed by the Bremen Port Authority for more than 30 years.
